Flicker

the big problem of

traditional lighting

What is flicker?

What is this flashing we can define as Flicker?

Flicker is defined as the repetitive variation in the intensity of light perceived by the eye. This variation is mainly due to fluctuations in the power supply.

One way to identify flicker is to record the lamp or bulb in question with your mobile phone. If you move your mouse over the mobile phone in the image below, you will see a familiar pattern. This is the Flicker effect.

What effects does it have on us flickering?

Although not everyone is aware of this flickering, the truth is that it affects us more than we realise. The main consequences are fatigue, headaches and decreased concentration levels.

How lighting works No Flicker

Watch the video

Flickering occurs due to the ripple in the voltage supplying the LED because DC sources are never perfectly linear. However, this effect is much less than, for example, with fluorescent tubes.

Following this reasoning all LED strips working on DC direct current will be non-flicker when using a high quality AC/DC power supply.

  • Flicker

    With Flicker driver

    Source voltage with flicker

    Modified AC alternating current

  • No Flicker

    Flicker-correcting driver

    Flicker-free source voltage

    Modified AC alternating current

No-Flicker drivers supply a constant, flicker-free current

Thanks to our quality drivers with no-flicker or flicker-free technology, we are able to switch the current from AC to DC without oscillations and thus guarantee a flicker-free environment.

European ecodesign standard

Regulation of Ecological Design against flicker

From 1 September 2021, a new SLR regulation is in place to improve the quality standard of all light source products. The Ecodesign Regulation 2019/2020 based on Directive 2009/125/EC is the mechanism through which the EU imposes not only energy efficiency requirements. It also includes other functional requirements related to the quality of light, including flickering, stroboscopic effect and colour rendering of the LED.

Don't get carried away by the cheapest prices, they may not comply with the regulations.

Although products already on the market may continue to be sold after this date, they may not be remanufactured. Therefore, it is very important to make sure that the products you are buying are Non Flicker (or Flicker Free) as this is a very important factor, although they may be slightly more expensive, they fulfil current regulations and are healthier for people.
