About Desk Lamps

How many lumens should desk lamps have?

Lumens - a unit used to measure the power of the luminous flux - are a factor to take into account when choosing the right desk lamps for both studying and working.

According to experts, desk lamps should be around 400-500 lumens to provide optimal light in work contexts to avoid or mitigate eyestrain.

Tips for buying desk lamps

When choosing between all desk lamps it is advisable to consider these 3 factors:

  1. The number of lumens. Lumens measure the amount of light emitted by a source. Thus, the larger the area to be illuminated, the greater the number of lumens. For desk lamps, you don't need more than 500 lumens.
  2. The temperature of the light. Desk lamps can emit a certain colour temperature, which can be cool, neutral or warm. Cool lights - they tend to have a bluish tone - are the most suitable when you have to fix your eyes and pay attention at short distances. They are between 5,500 degrees Kelvin -ºK- and 8,500 ºK. If, on the other hand, you want to create warmth or highlight a special corner of your home or business, opt for warm auxiliary lights with a maximum of 3,000ºK.
  3. The Chromatic Reproduction Index -IRC-. It indicates the capacity of a light source to show the real colours of an object taking natural light as a reference -IRC 100-. Thus, flexo lamps with a CRI between 90 and 100 do not alter the colours, which is why they are usually used in printing workshops, for example.
  4. The type of flexo. Depending on the type, you will be able to find among others:
    • Desk lamps.
    • Table lamps.
    • Wall-mounted.
    • Floor lamp.
    • With clip.
    • With pencil holder.
    • With spotlights.
    • Wooden.
    • Aluminium.
    • Made of metal.
    • Of various combined materials.
